நகைச்சுவையிலும் குணச்சித்திர நடிப்பிலும் பலப்பல சாதனைகள் படைத்த நடிகர் நாகேஷ் இன்று மரணம் அடைந்தார். அவருக்கு வயது (75).

சில நாட்களாகவே அவருக்கு உடல் நலக் கோளாறு இருந்து வந்தது. இரு மாதங்களுக்கு முன் அவருக்கு கடும் நெஞ்சுவலி ஏற்பட்டது. பின்னர் தீவிர சிகிச்சைக்குப் பிறகு குணமடைந்து வீட்டில் ஓய்வெடுத்து வந்தார்.

சென்னை, ஜன. 31: தமிழ் திரைப்பட நகைச்சுவை நடிகர்களில் மிகச்சிறந்த நடிகராக கருதப்படும் நாகேஷ் இன்று காலை காலமானார். அவருக்கு வயது 76. சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் ரஜினிகாந்த், கமல்ஹாசன் உள்ளிட்ட திரையுலக பிரமுகர்கள் நாகேஷ் மறைவுக்கு கண்ணீர் அஞ்சலி செலுத்தினர்.

கலைவாணர் என்.எஸ்.கிருஷ்ணன், கே.ஏ.தங்கவேலு, சந்திரபாபு ஆகிய நகைச்சுவை மன்னர்களை அடுத்து தமிழ் திரைவுலகில் 25 ஆண்டு களுக்கு மேலாக தனது நகைச்சுவை நடிப்பின் மூலம் தமிழ் ரசிகர்களை கவர்ந்தவர் நடிகர் நாகேஷ்.

ஏராளமான திரைப்படங்களில் நடித்த அவர், தொடர்ந்து குணச்சித்திர வேடங்களில் பரிமளித்து வந்தார். கடந்த சில நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு வீட்டில் வழுக்கி விழுந்ததால் நாகேசுக்கு தலையில் அடிபட்டது. இதற்காக மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப் பட்ட அவருக்கு ரத்தக்கசிவு இருந்ததாக கூறப்படுகிறது. இதனால் மூச்சுத்திணறலும் இருந்து வந்ததாக தெரிகிறது.

நேற்றிரவு மூச்சுத்திணறல் அதிகரித்து மருத்துவமனையில் அவர் சேர்க்கப்பட்டார். அவர் நன்றாக இருப்பதாக மருத்துவர்கள் தெரிவித் ததை அடுத்து அவர் வீட்டிற்கு கொண்டுவரப்பட்டார். இன்று காலை மீண்டும் மூச்சுத்திணறல் ஏற்பட்டு மருத்துவர்கள் வருவதற்குள் காலை 11.20 மணியளவில் அவரது உயிர் பிரிந்தது. நாகேசுக்கு நடிகர் ஆனந்த்பாபு, டேவிட் என்கிற 2 மகன்கள் உள்ளனர்.

நாகேஷின் உடல் சென்னை ஆழ்வார்பேட்டையில் உள்ள அவரது இல்லத்தில் பொது மக்களின் அஞ்சலிக்காக வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. நடிகர் சங்கம் சார்பில் நாகேஷின் மறைவுக்கு இரங்கல் தெரிவிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளது. சூப்பர் ரஜினிகாந்த், கமலஹாசன், சோ, மனோரமா உள்ளிட்ட திரையுலக பிரமுகர்கள் அவரது வீட்டிற்கு சென்று அஞ்சலி செலுத்தினர். இயக்குனர்கள் உள்ளிட்ட திரையுலக பிரமுகர்களும் அஞ்சலி செலுத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

வாழ்க்கை குறிப்பு

கர்நாடக மாநிலத்தை சேர்ந்தவரான நாகேஷின் இயற்பெயர் குண்டுராவ் என்பதாகும். தந்தை கிருஷ்ணாராவ், தாயார் ருக்மணி அம்மாள். கிருஷ்ணாராவ் ரெயில்வேயில் வேலை பார்த்து வந்தார். தமிழ்நாட்டுக்கு வந்த அவர்கள், தாராபுரத்தில் தங்கியிருந்தனர். 1933 ஆம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 27ந் தேதி பிறந்த நாகேஷ், தாராபுரத்தில் தனது இளமை பருவத்தை கழித்தார். பல இடங்களில் வேலை பார்த்த அவர், கடைசியாக ரெயில்வேயில் குமாஸ்தாவாக சென்னையில் பணி யாற்றினார்.

சிறுவயதில் இருந்தே நடிப்பின் மீது பற்றுகொண்ட நாகேஷ்,அமெச்சூர் நாடகங்களில் நடித்து வந்தார். ஒரு நாடகத்தில் வயிற்றுவலி காரணமாக அவர் நடித்ததை பார்த்து எம்ஜிஆர் வெகுவாக பாராட்டினார்.

திரைப்படங்களில் நடிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வத்தோடு இருந்த நாகேஷ், தாமரைக்குளம் என்ற படத்தின் மூலம் திரையுலகில் நுழைந்தார்.

அதன் பிறகு பல படங்களில் நகைச்சுவை நடிகராக வேடந்தாங்கி சிறப்பாக நடித்தார். அவருக்கு பல படங்களில் ஜோடியாக நடித்தவர் மனோரமா ஆவார். இந்த ஜோடி இல்லாத படமே ஒருகாலத்தில் இல்லை என்ற நிலை நிலவியது.

கே. பாலசந்தர் கதைவசனம் எழுதிய சர்வர் சுந்தரம் திரைப்படத்தில் மிகச்சிறப்பாக நடித்து குணச்சித்ர நடிப்பிலும் நாகேஷ் சிறந்து விளங்கினார்.

திருவிளையாடல் படத்தில் சிவாஜியுடன், புலவர் தருமியாக நடித்த நாகேசுக்கு அந்த படத்தில் பெரும் புகழ் கிட்டியது. காதலிக்க நேரமில்லை, தில்லானா மோகனாம்பாள் ஆகிய படங்களில் நாகேஷின் நடிப்பு அவருக்கு பெயர் வாங்கி கொடுத்தது.

தேன்கிண்ணம், நவக்கிரஹம், எதிர்நீச்சல், நீர்குமிழி, யாருக்காக அழுதான், அனுபவி ராஜா அனுபவி போன்ற படங்களில் அவர் கதாநாயகனாகவும் நடித்திருக்கிறார்.

நடிகர் வீரப்பனுடன் சேர்ந்து பணத்தோட்டம் படத்தில் அவர் அடிக்கும் லூட்டிகளை பார்த்து சிரித்து சிரித்து வயிறு புண்ணாகாதவர்கள் இல்லை என்று கூறலாம். கலாட்டா கல்யாணம், சுமதி என் சுந்தரி, அன்பே வா உள்பட பல படங்களில் அவரது நகைச்சுவை நடிப்பு பிரகாசித்தது.

கமலஹாசன் தயாரித்த அபூர்வ சகோதரர்கள் படத்தில் கொடும் வில்லனாகவும் அவர் தோன்றினார். நூற்றுக்கணக்கான படங்களில் நடித்துள்ள நாகேஷ் நடித்த கடைசி படம் தசாவதாரம் ஆகும்.

நாகேஷின் இழப்பு திரையுலகில் ஈடுசெய்ய முடியாத வெற்றிடத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது. முதல்வர் இரங்கல் நாகேஷின் மறைவுக்கு முதல்வர் கருணாநிதி இரங்கல் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். கலைத்துறையில் புகழ் பெற்ற சிறந்த குணச்சித்திர நடிகரான நாகேஷ் இன்றைய தினம் இயற்கை அடைந்த செய்தியினை அறிந்து பெருந்துயருற்றேன்.

தனிச்சிறப்பான நகைச்சுவையாலும், பல திறப்பட்ட நடிப்பாற்றலாலும் தமிழகத் திரைப்பட வரலாற்றில் தனக்காக ஒரு தனி இடத்தைப் பெற்றவர் அருமை நண்பர் நாகேஷ். தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் என்னிடம் மாறாத அன்பும், பாசமும் கொண்டவர். தமிழ்த் திரைப்பட ரசிகர்களின் பேராதரவையும் மதிப்பையும் பெற்றவர்.

நாகேஷின் மறைவினால் வாடும் அவரது குடும்பத்தினருக்கும், திரையுலக நண்பர்களுக்கும் எனது ஆழ்ந்த இரங்கலைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்.

Nagesh is no more

For once, the description 'death has the last laugh' would be temptingly appropriate. For death today laid its icy hands on the greatest comedian of Tamil (perhaps even Indian) cinema, Nagesh.

And his demise must have been his eventual way of humouring death itself. But, for all we know, even death would have spilled a few tears after snatching away the smiles of an entire State.

His end came after a longish bout of ill-health He was 76, and is survived by three sons (Anand Babu, Ramesh Babu and Rajesh Babu) and five grandchildren. His wife had pre-deceased him.

Nagesh had developed some complications in his legs some six months back. After treatment, his movements were restricted.

According to family sources, he had a fall in his house a few days ago and the wound had to be stitched upon. This morning he suddenly swooned and fell down. He was rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvanmiyur where he was declared dead on arrival.

His body is kept at his St Mary's Road residence and his final rites are scheduled for tomorrow at the Besant Nagar crematorium.

Fans and big names from the film industry have started pouring in to pay their last respects in the form of sobs and tears to a man who had so far elicited only the opposite of that —— unbridled laughter and pleasant smiles.

Hailing from Karnataka, Nagesh was born Gundu Rao, a name that particularly seemed incongruent to his reedy figure. Perhaps the seeds of comedy and humour were sown right from the day he was named. It continued till a few months before he died.

His last released movie was Dasavatharam, in which he played the father to the tall Khalifullah character that Kamal Haasan played.

Dasavatharam, then again, is titularly appropriate to a career that has been all about avatars on screen. After stumbling on to films through the inevitable route of stage plays, Nagesh was quickly able to establish his credentials with his flair for organic comedy and spontaneous wit.

Though his initial inspiration was the Hollywood 'caperist' Jerry Lewis, Nagesh however grew out of his spiritual mentor by creating his own brand that had the eclectic mix of slapstick and stand-up. But his acting idiom was posited on strong grammar, and he could do adequate justice to any 'character' role.

He had worked with aplomb all the big directors, especially K Balachander and Sridhar, the two who had an innate understanding of cinema humour, and knew that Nagesh could deliver that. Nagesh was also an intrinsic part of most MGR and Sivaji Ganesan movies.

Kamal Haasan was another discerning 'humourphile' who understood Nagesh's value and talent. And it was natural Kamal was one of the earliest who arrived to pay his homage today.

Rajnikanth, another who respected Nagesh, was also at hand. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who himself is undergoing treatment at a hospital, shot off a condolence message.

During his active career, Nagesh was capable of inducing laughter from even the stoniest of objects. Tonight, even a stone would be teary-eyed.

Humour was in his character

With the passing away of Nagesh, the stellar comedian, a golden era in the history of Tamil cinema comes to a close.The comedian who had the rare distinction of being a legend in his life-time breathed his last in Chennai today after a prolonged illenss.

Born as Gunddu Rao to Kannada speaking Brahmin Madhwa parents Nagesh was drawn to films even at a young age. He left his home with a firm determination that he would return only after establishing himself in some career.

His coming to Chennai, lodging in a 'single room' in West Mambalam with lyricist Vaali and veteran actor Srikanth and finding a small time job in the Railways that far from satisfied him marked the modest beginning of a star that shone with dazzling brilliance on the cine-sky for years to come.

It was when Nagesh started playing small roles in various drama troupes to keep himself busy that producer Balaji spotted him and gave him his first break in films.

Thereafter as they say there was no looking back for Nagesh whose performance after performance as the comic stole and ruled the hearts of the cine audience so much so that comedy became synonymous with the name Nagesh. Nagesh has acted in many films with Sivaji Ganesan and MGR.

His roles in Thiruvilaiyadal, Kathalika Neramillai, Thillana Mohanambal, Server Sundaram, Pattanithal Bootham, Neerkumizhi, Edhirneechal, Aboorva Raagangal, Anbe Vaa to name a few have become part of legend.

The roles which he essayed with elan and a keen sense of timing are references for aspiring and established actors. He was also a talented dancer.

Directors like Sridhar and Balachander used his potential to the full giving him roles equal to that of the leading stars of the day. His role as villainous comic pimp in Thillana Mohannambal brought to light another facet of this great actor which was put to use in Kamal Haasan's Aboorva Sahodharargal.

Incidentally his professional connection with Kamal Hassan is of great relevance. He went on to play memorable roles in Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Magalir Mattum and Nammavar with Kamal.

Kamal Hassan often said that he felt envious of Nagesh's immense talent especially wwhen he worked with Balachander. At times when Kamal found it difficult to bring out the right emotions for the camera, KB apparently used to chide him saying 'had this scene been given to Nagesh, he would have done this in the first take itself.'

Balachander once recalled how Nagesh prophesied his success while driving down Radhakrishnan salai. When KB asked him why he was driving so fast, Nagesh told him not to get scared. ' I know I am responsibile for the life and safety of one of the India's great directors.'

That was long before Balachander entered the film industry.
In the twilight of his career, Nagesh took up character roles which he essayed with equal aplomb.

For all his acting prowess, Nagesh never got his due recognition. The National awards eluded him till the end. That is perhaps the tragedy of a great performer who regaled the hearts of his audience with his art.

The Tamil film industry condoled Nagesh's death. Popular comedian Vivek, expressed shock and said, 'he was an inspiration for all comedians. He set an example for us venturing to play lead roles.'

'Skilled at both slapstick and stand-up comedy, his sheer presence on screen evoked humour,' Vivek said.

Veteran artiste Manorama, who shared the screen with Nagesh in over 100 films, said, 'I am shocked and speechless. In his death I have lost a good friend of mine. I am yet to recover from the demise of Nambiar. Now Nagesh's death has come as a double blow.'

'His subtle variations and body language are unforgettable. He was a friend and a guide to me. Also, he had been behind me during troubled times. Memories of sharing the screen with 'Sivaji' Ganesan and Nagesh still linger.'

Condoling the death of Nagesh, Nadigar Sangam president R Sarath Kumar said, 'The film industry has lost its leading light. A source of courage and inspiration for younger generation, I recall with tears my long-standing association with him.'

'I express my regret to several thousand fans of the actor across the globe and pray that his soul rests in peace'. Noted film director Vikraman, who worked with Nagesh in Poovae Unakkaga said, 'he was a thorough professional.

He co-operated us well in Poovae Unakkaga. He was simple and down-to-earth despite his achievements. A man who constantly improvised on the sets, Nagesh would be sorely missed'.
